Japan’s First "Local Production for Local Consumption of Electricity"
In Kitanakagusuku Village, Okinawa, an innovative project combining agriculture, welfare, and renewable energy is underway as part of the “To Create a Village of Health and Welfare Utilizing Agriculture in Kitanakagusuku Village” initiative. This project is being recognized as a pioneering model of local resource circulation and sustainable living.
The initiative utilizes unused farmland and local organic waste, such as food scraps and pruned branches, to generate methane gas through fermentation. The resulting energy will be used to supply electricity to nearby facilities, marking Japan’s first such initiative.
In addition to energy generation, the project integrates welfare aspects, including a School Children’s Farm where kids can learn about farming and engage in hands-on activities.
This initiative embodies the concept of an "EM Universal Village," where environmental conservation, health, and education are closely connected.
Project manager Mr. Yuya Yamashiro shared his vision:
“Local waste is processed locally, and everything produced in the process is used to its fullest, creating a sustainable cycle within the community. The project works because it involves the local people. For instance, school children are thrilled to grow their own carrots, potatoes, and onions, and then use them to make curry rice.”
Phase 1 of the project is managed by EM Research Organization, which provides microbial technologies to support sustainable agriculture and waste management.
