Overview

Fuji Rock Festival, the largest outdoor music event in Japan, was held on 28th to 30th July, 2023. Held since 1997, 2023 was the 26th year of this annual festival. During the three-day festival, the Earth Toilet Project was conducted to reduce unpleasant odors in portable toilets by decomposing feces with the power of microbes. Initiated by our sister company, EM SEIKATSU, this eco-conscious project was first launched in 2018.
EM Application

500 portable toilets were installed at the venue and Earth Toilet Project was implemented in 180 of them by 16 project members from the EM Group in cooperation with several dozen staff from other companies. Activated EM・1 (AEM) was poured into the water and sewage tanks. Furthermore, the staff continuously cleaned up using AEM every hour.

Here are comments from participants regarding microbial toilets shared on social media:

“The Clean Staff kept the toilets sparkling clean. I expect the toilets will be more comfortable at the outdoor festivals.”
"There is a noticeable reduction in unpleasant odors compared to last year's festival."
"The portable toilets have been cleaned regularly, so while they may have a slight odor, they are well maintained."
“The odor has been significantly reduced compared to last year. It's really impressive.”

One of the project members said, “The second goal of the Earth Toilet Project is to provide an opportunity for people to know how to use the temporary toilets in the event of a disaster”. When natural disasters strike, there is often extensive damage to the area’s infrastructure, including sanitation systems. This makes it difficult for those affected by the disaster to have access to sanitation services that are critical for health and safety. During the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, EM was applied to portable toilets installed in affected areas to maintain hygiene.
