Sustainable and Safe Pig Production
Okinawa, JapanBusiness Overview
Located in the Nothern part of Okinawa, Okinawa Hokuto Ltd., breeds "AGU" pigs, a native species in Okinawa. They also produce compost from pig manure.
In order to fulfill their mission, "coexisting with the local community while providing safe products to the consumers in a sustainable way", the company started using EM Technology in 2020.
Mr. Oshiro, the president of Okinawa Hokuto, wanted to introduce EM Technology step by step, after his employees understand EM Technology very well, to improve the farm environment and build up their new brand.
They first started applying EM in their compost production.
Since they saw excellent results on composting, they started using EM in pig farming as well.
EM Application
For composting:
They dilute Activated EM・1 in water and spray on the pig manure that is discharged every day. It is then transferred to the compost production lane. (See pictures)
Twice a month, the entire compost production lane is sprayed with Activated EM・1.
For pig farming:
Activated EM・1 is added into the drinking water pipes in the piggery.
Effects and Results
Compared to the compost produced in conventional ways, EM compost has no bad odors. When they checked the ammonia level in EM compost in the compost lane and inside the containers, ammonia was not detected at all.
As for the EM drinking water, bad odor and flies decreased to a great degree.
Okinawa Hokuto Ltd. will continue using EM Technology and research the changes in odors as well as the pig mortality and meat quality.
They will also actively promote recycling organic waste, especially pineapples, which is the local speciallity.
