#204 How EM Use Has Spread Throughout the Philippines

#204 How EM Use Has Spread Throughout the Philippines
The use of EM has spread throughout the Philippines ever since the launch of APNAN, Asia-Pacific Natural Agriculture Network, and many research institutions continue to cooperate in various ways, including the assignment of staff members from the government’s Philippine Rice Research Institute, PhilRice  to study at the University of the Ryukyus Graduate School.

According to the following report from Mr. Fukugauchi, as a private initiative a training center similar to the International Center for Nature Farming in Saraburi, Thailand, has been established in northern Luzon Island, Philippines, and the use of EM is steadily expanding.

Mr. Fukugauchi joined EM Research Organization, Inc. (EMRO) in 1996 and has been working hard to promote EM technology overseas ever since. After graduating from university, he worked as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) in Ghana, Africa. After joining EMRO, he continued to work consistently overseas, focusing on the spread of EM technology in Africa. In 2012, he was involved in the preparations for the establishment of EMRO Malaysia, and from his base in Malaysia is currently responsible for its operation and for supporting EM businesses in a wide range of regions, including Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. These activities by Mr. Fukugauchi have been a major driving force in expanding the potential of EM.

In the Philippines, EM is also being utilized in fisheries and livestock production and is being used extensively for water purification. In particular, EM is being actively used to help clean up Manila Bay and Laguna Lake under the initiative of the City of Manila and the government, using public funds. This article is an example that shows the ripple effect, with EM now being used in many regions for odor control and environmental sanitation measures.

Below is Mr. Fukugauchi’s report.

1. Report on Visit to Harbest Agribusiness Corporation
Harbest Agribusiness Corporation is a general agricultural materials company based in the Philippines that handles a wide range of agricultural machinery, fertilizers, seeds, and other agriculture-related supplies. In recent years, in collaboration with universities the company has also expanded into the tissue culture business of bananas and flowers and provides agricultural training for existing farmers and new farmers at its own training farm.

The president of the company,Toto, (Mr. Arsenio Toto Barcelona) suffered major health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic and nearly died, but from last year he has been steadily recovering. Currently the management of the company has been handed over to his son, and Toto is focusing on social contributions and educational activities such as an agricultural training center and a tissue culture training facility.

2. Agricultural Training Center
Currently, workshops are being held for farmers in the Philippines, but in the future, they are considering accepting trainees from overseas. EMRO is expected to provide support for the training, including public relations activities and dispatching instructors.

The training facility is located in an agricultural area in northern Manila and can accommodate up to 100 trainees. In addition, there are several facilities in Asia where trainees can learn EM-based farming, and if EMRO can introduce and support these training centers, it may be possible to provide a more fulfilling training environment.
